Benoni principal honoured at National Leadership Awards
Rosina Mabilo, who has been in the teaching profession for 42 years, began her career in 1983
Moshibudi Rosina Mabilo, principal of Ikwezi-Khanyeng Primary School in Mackenzie Park, has made the city proud by achieving second place in the country at the South African Principals’ Association (SAPA) National Leadership Awards powered by Standard Bank.
The prestigious awards ceremony took place on September 12 in Gqeberha, where Mabilo represented Gauteng, the Ekurhuleni North District, and Ikwezi-Khanyeng Primary School.
Mabilo, who has been in the teaching profession for 42 years, began her career in 1983. She joined Ikwezi-Khanyeng in 1990 and was appointed principal in May 2014. The school, formerly known as Van Ryn Deep School, operates within the Mary Moodley CYCC and primarily serves learners admitted through court orders.
Mabilo expressed her gratitude, saying this recognition is not hers alone; it belongs to many.

“I want to thank the Gauteng Education Department for providing resources, the Ekurhuleni North District for their guidance, my dedicated teachers at Ikwezi-Khanyeng, Social Development, the private centres where our children stay, and a very special thank you to Thandeka Dube for nominating me. Without your support, this moment would not have been possible.”
Ikwezi-Khanyeng faces unique challenges, as learners often arrive throughout the year, many referred through social services and carrying scars of trauma, neglect, or abuse. Under Mabilo’s leadership, the school has become a place of belonging, support, and hope.
Initiatives such as feeding schemes, after-school classes, digital learning, and mentorship programmes address both academic and emotional needs.
Reflecting on her journey, Mabilo recalled starting school “by accident” at the age of just five, when a teacher saw her potential and sparked her imagination.
“That faith shaped who I am today. It is why I encourage my teachers to bring out the best in every learner. I believe every child has the power to rise, to lead, and to succeed.”
Mabilo said this award is a reminder that leadership is not about titles, but about planting seeds of hope and nurturing them until they grow.
“I dedicate this award to my learners, they are my inspiration, and to every child in South Africa who dares to dream,” Mabilo said.
