Help Fairleads family raise funds for son with special needs

A Fairleads family is rallying the community with a fundraiser at the Barnyard Theatre at Emperors Palace on October 11 at 19:00 to help cover medical and living expenses for their son, nine-year-old Marius Ferreira, who lives with special needs.

Marius’ mother, Rochelle, explained that he was born prematurely at just 28 weeks. Two weeks later, he was diagnosed with a fungal infection that resulted in a PVL brain bleed.

Since then, Marius has faced numerous medical challenges. He has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, microcephaly, silent reflux and epilepsy, and relies on a feeding tube for nourishment.

Despite these hurdles, his family continues to fight for his care and quality of life, with the upcoming fundraiser serving as an important step in supporting his journey.

“Marius’ immune system is very weak. A common cold for us could mean a hospital stay for him. He’s on a very special diet as well. Hospitals are his second home. His medical expenses are quite high – around R7 112.81 per month,” said Rochelle.

“He’s in need of adult diapers, wet wipes and medicine, as well as a new specialised wheelchair and equipment to help us bathe him. He’s extremely tall and quite heavy. The funds from the event are going to help with these expenses. There are also a few surprises after the show.”

Rochelle is also selling trays of extra-large eggs, with the profit going towards Marius’ expenses.
