Emergency services on high alert for flooding
Residents are encouraged to heed safety warnings.
Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) aquatic, rescue, firefighters and disaster management teams are on high alert due to heavy rainfall predicted by the South African Weather Service.
DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi said residents are urged to remain vigilant as persistent heavy and disruptive rains continue.
“Low-lying areas, bridges, open water streams, rivers and dams are at risk of flooding, which could adversely affect structures built on flood lines.
“Motorists and pedestrians are advised to exercise caution during these adverse weather conditions to prevent loss of life due to drownings and vehicle accidents.”
Ntladi offers the following safety tips:
• Avoid crossing flooded bridges.
• Steer clear of low-lying bridges and roads; use alternative routes.
• Do not attempt to cross swollen streams and rivers.
• Refrain from driving on roads in low-lying areas prone to flooding.
• Seek higher ground if rising water levels are observed.
• Maintain a safe following distance while driving.
• Ensure vehicles are roadworthy for varying weather conditions.
