Flood warning for these Benoni roads

Both roads were rendered impassable during the December 14 storm.

The South African Weather Services has issued a potential flood warning leading up to Christmas, with rain clouds rolling in across most of Gauteng.

Motorists using Atlas Road between Commissioner Street and Racecourse Road, and Lakefield Avenue and Lanyon Road have been cautioned to avoid these areas during rain.

Both roads were flooded during the December 14 downpour, rendering them impassable to motorists.

According to Ward 28 Clr Mary Goby, the officials from the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) drained both areas of excess water but could not identify blockages in the stormwater drainage system, which may have led to water damming.

“We urge residents and motorists to avoid these areas during heavy downpours and to not attempt to navigate through pools of water,” she said.

“All efforts are being made to prevent future incidents of flooding.”
