WATCH: Fire victims seek help after home destroyed

The family said they have been battling to sleep following the blaze which left them homeless.

A Daveyton family is desperately in need of help after their five-room house burnt down, leaving them with nothing but the pyjamas that they were wearing in the early hours on January 22.

The family also lost their beloved dog Njabulo, who went inside the house in an attempt to save the family from the blaze.

According to Patience Dube (28), who visibly looked shaken when she spoke to the City Times on February 3, she doesn’t know how or where the fire started.

Devastated Patience Dube stands inside a room she once called her living room.

“My husband and I were sleeping with our seven-month-old child in our bedroom when suddenly we were awoken by the smell of smoke.

“Realising that the house was on fire, we rushed to our two children’s room and woke them up. We managed to get outside, however, we couldn’t save anything due to the flames that had engulfed the whole house.”

She said when they went to bed on January 21 there was load-shedding and they switched off all appliances.

She said she suspects that the fire might have broken out seconds after the power went on.

Dube said fortunately her three children and husband escaped the fire with no injuries but she suffered minor injuries on her head and neck.

“It’s been hard to sleep ever since the fire incident. Every time I close my eyes I see the flames which still haunt me to this day. I feel like I need counselling,” said Dube.

The family is appealing for assistance rebuild our lives.

They need poles and slabs, cement, roofing materials, clothes, blankets and food. Anyone who would like to donate may contact 061 700 4758.
