Youth Empowerment Group encourages a way out of drug addiction

Seven people during the event signed up for rehabilitation.

Members of the Youth Empowerment Group recently held an awareness event to fight alcohol and drug abuse in Mayfield.

The speakers included police officers from the Putfontein SAPS, the EMPD, social workers and Sanca representatives.

According to organiser Busisiwe Molala, the event was a success, and seven people willingly signed up to be taken to rehabilitation centres.

“Drugs such as crystal meth and nyaope are a big problem in our community, and the users resort to violence.
“These drugs cause our youth to steal and fight with their parents.”

She said they always encouraged children to go to support groups to avoid being on the streets and exposed to drugs.

Social workers advised the youth to avoid drugs and alcohol.

Pick n Pay and Meat World in Mayfield Square, which donated food for the 300 guests, supported the event.
