FINAL WARNING: Ensure your meter is recoded

These are the ways to check whether your meter has been updated.

With three days left before cutoff, electricity consumers have been warned that if their electricity prepaid meters are not recoded by November 24, they will not be able to load electricity after the deadline.

After 20:24 on November 24, meters will no longer accept electricity tokens unless they are upgraded to Key Revision Number 2 (KRN 2).

This means once your current credit is depleted, you will lose power, and the meter will become inoperable – necessitating that the customer buys a replacement meter, estimated at the cost of up to R12 000.

To help its customers from being left in the dark or incurring the replacement costs, the City of Ekurhuleni says it has managed to achieve its target of updating all actively buying prepayment meters.

“The city would like to assure its electricity prepayment consumers, specifically those that are consistently purchasing electricity that their meters will not be affected by the technology change with respect to TID rollover and will still operate normally,” assured metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini.

If the meter displays the expected results, your meter has been upgraded and you can continue to buy electricity tokens.

However, if the meter displays 1, then you need to update your meter, collect a set of Keychange tokens at your nearest Energy Department offices situated throughout the city.

You can contact the City of Ekurhuleni’s call centre on 0860 543 000.
