Strand by strand Belvedere supports cancer awareness

Funds raised during the month-long campaign were donated to Cansa and ERPC.

Learners and staff of Belvedere School have opted for a trim, cut and colour with a difference.

From the beginning of October, a simple campaign geared towards raising cancer awareness blossomed into a powerful gesture to honour those affected, while inspiring acts of courage and compassion.

The fundraising aspect of the initiative collectively raised R5 000 in aid of Cansa and East Rand Palliative Care (ERPC), formerly known as Hospice East Rand.

“From the beginning of the month, trees across the school premises were adorned in colours representing the various types of cancer, with local businesses, parents and the community joining hands to decorate them in memory of those who bravely fought but sadly lost the battle,” said Chrizanne Steyn-Maritz, educational psychologist at the school.

“These living memorials stand as a constant reminder of the importance of regular screening and early detection.”

But this was only the start.

As the initiative gained momentum, the school’s girls formed snaking lines donating 25cm of their manes to Cansa for wig-making while the boys dared to go bare, shaving their heads in solidarity with patients undergoing treatment.

“Once the hair flew, creativity and colour took centre stage at the sprayathon station, where learners and staff expressed their unwavering support with flair,” said Chrizanne.

“This event was a celebration of hope that has shown that awareness about more than sharing information, it is about action, unity, and heart.

“The Belvedere RCL Disciplinary Council’s dedication to ensuring the success of this lengthy campaign proved that the fight against cancer requires a community that stands tall, tree by tree, strand by strand, and soul by soul.
