What will they charge for next?

When will it end? writes by email:

It seems the municipality has managed to sneak in another additional charge under the name of “Area Cleansing Levy – R5.70 pm”

I was under the impression that our assessment rates covered street cleaning, etc – not that the streets in my area are cleaned by the municipality.

I, along with my neighbours, pick up all the rubbish thrown on the pavement, as well as mowing the grass on council-owned land.

Since the introduction of this additional charge I have not seen any improvement in the litter situation in the suburbs.

The council announced with great fanfare that there would be no increase in the rate in the rand charged for assessment rates, but what is this charge if not an increase?

What next?

Will council be introducing a Painting Levy because I paint my own house, or a Garden Cleansing Levy because I attend to my own garden?
