Ridge Road squalor a breeding ground for criminals

Lana O’Neill, community support manager, ADT South Africa, writes:

I was in an attempted smash-and-grab on the corner of Ridge and Atlas roads – travelling north towards Mercury Road – on September 18, at around 8.30pm.

I am sure the robber came out of and disappeared back into the veld on the left hand side of the road.

This derelict property, along with the others on Ridge Road, is a security risk and health hazard.

It astounds me that the council is turning a blind eye to these overgrown properties.

I lived at Plot 55 Ridge Road for most of my life, until my mom sold to a developer, many years ago.

Our plot, along with the adjoining stands which the developer also bought – including a residential property behind 55 Ridge Road, which faces the school in Rolls Royce Street – have all gone to the dogs and it doesn’t seem to bother anyone.

Ridge Road was known as “Millionaires’ Drive” at one time, but the section between Atlas and Elizabeth roads is the epitome of anything but.

I don’t know how the residents on either side of that property in Rolls Royce Street can live next door to that jungle, either.

These properties are all nesting grounds for criminals and other vermin.

Surely the council and SAPS are not blind!

I am sure I was not the first and won’t be the last to be accosted by criminals in this area.

Go and see for yourself what “Millionaires’ Drive” has degenerated to.
