Thanks to Lions for help

Merle Spiessens writes by email:

I would like to thank Vivien Hassett, of the Benoni van Rhyn Lions Club, for organising the hearing test and hearing aids for my father.

Vivien you have brought back the joy and colour to his life. He can hear his footsteps, a sound he had forgotten existed, the crumpling of paper, the tick-tick of the indicator in his little car, the clarity of our voices when we speak without shouting.

It is wonderful to be able to TALK to my dad again, instead of giving up and just having one word guesses ending in misunderstandings and frustrations.

His grandchildren are happy that grandpa now understands what they’re saying and they don’t have to repeat themselves “hundreds of times”.

We take hearing so for granted and, when it is whittled away from us bit by bit, it is not just the person with the hearing loss who suffers, but also their loved ones.

Thank you to all those who brought back the joy to our family.
