Paddler conquers the Berg River
Benoni's Malcolm Stothard recently took on the four-day long Berg River Marathon.
Malcolm Stothard, a Benoni resident, was one of the two dozen Gautengers who made the trip to Paarl, for the start of the four-day long Berg River Marathon.
The Berg River Marathon is the longest river canoe race in South Africa, covering a distance of 240km over four days, from Paarl to Velddrift, on the Western Cape Coast.
Stothard (who has a canoe manufacturing business) finished the race in a time of 20 hours and 10 minutes.
He has achieved a well earned reputation as a strong and highly respected paddler, who takes on the toughest and trickiest challenges and has a number of international competition achievements on his canoeing CV.
He was the first “Sub Master” finisher at the Berg River Marathon and finished 30th of over 150 starters.
