Runners gear up for truest test
Benoni Northerns and Benoni Harriers athletics clubs held their respective annual Comrades Marathon breakfasts on Sunday, May 25, as runners prepare for the daunting ultra-marathon.
Benoni Northerns will be sending one of the largest running groups in the country to take on Sunday’s gruelling Comrades Marathon, with a total of 173 Northerns runners taking on the down run challenge from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
This number includes 38 novices and 10 runners who are aiming to join the Green Number Club (10 plus medals), while Gunter Stapel and Greg Bishop will be aiming for their double green numbers.
Harriers will send a field of 30 runners, including 20 runners who already have green numbers, and two novices.
Allan Collin and James Reid will each run their 25th race, while novice Janine Wessels will be the club’s sole woman runner.
Harriers chairman Ashvin Jivan makes his return to Comrades after five years.
