Farrarmere lose the penalty kick lottery

Farrarmere Primary School lose out on penalties.

There is a common cliché in football that refers to the penalty shout-out as a “lottery” because the result can swing either way.

This is exactly what happened to Farrarmere Primary School’s u-12 soccer team’s dream of representing South Africa in the Danone Nations Cup in São Paulo, Brazil, in November in the final of the national tournament on Saturday, June 28, at the WJ Clements Stadium in Reiger Park, Boksburg.

Having won the u-12 Danone Nations Cup Gauteng provincial tournament a fortnight prior to this at the same venue the team convincingly advanced through Pool A at the national tournament on Saturday and met Siphumelele Primary School from KwaZulu-Natal.

The game itself was as close as it gets with the score at 0-0 at full time.

Farrarmere seemed to have the upper hand in the first stanza, while Siphumelele had the better second half.

With no extra time being played the teams, went straight to the daunting penalty shoot-out, which would eventually end 3-2 in favour of the opposition from KwaZulu-Natal.

Tebogo Ngakane, team manager, said that the team was a little dejected by the loss on penalties, but were remaining focused on the positives from the tournament.

“The boys played fantastically and there has been a lot of interest in this team, so it is not all negative,” he said.
