Bad light, weather, force draw
The four-day Sunfoil Series encounter between the Unlimited Titans and the Nashua Cape Cobras petered out into a draw, after bad light and wet weather played its part, at Willowmoore Park, on Sunday, March 22.
Bad light forced the players to leave the field 20 minutes before the lunch interval on day four, with the Titans on 421/3, still trailing the Cobras’ large first-innings total of 484, by 63 runs.
In their final domestic first-class clash of the 2014/2015 Sunfoil Series, the Titans, who eventually placed third on the log, picked up a total of 6.80 points from the match (bowling 1.0 and batting 5.80).
After choosing to bowl first, the Titans were on the back foot with the ball for most of the first two days, as left-handed batsman Omphile Ramela stood firm in the crease for the Cobras for over 10 hours, as he notched up a career-best double century (202 not out) that included 27 fours and two sixes.
Left-arm seamer Rowan Richards was the pick of the Titans bowlers, with figures of 5/114 in 30.5 overs.
When the Titans stepped into the crease, it was Protea opening batsman Dean Elgar who continued the run-fest in Benoni, by achieving the second double ton of the match, a score of 208 off 277 deliveries, before retiring hurt on day four.
Eight-overs after Elgar went off injured the rain came down and no further play was possible.
Henry Davids, Theunis de Bruyn and Graeme van Buuren each scored half-centuries during the batting innings.
