Du Preez is king of the Lake
The Lake Club Benoni golf course was in superb condition for the hosting of this year’s Club Championships.
A record entry of 232 members took part in the championships, making it necessary to play the Women’s Championship and the C-Division Championships over the weekend of March 7 and 8, while 162 A and B division members played over the weekend of March 14 and 15.
Rowan du Preez again showed why he is considered one of the top golfers in the Ekurhuleni region, by winning The Lake Club Championships for the second time, the first time since 2004.
Du Preez, who also won the recent Ekurhuleni Golf Union (EGU) Closed Championship from a strong field, was in great form in the first round of The Lake Club Championship, firing a fantastic four-under-par 68 to lead the field by three shots from young Jared Miller (71) and Nkosinathi Dauwa (71).
The second round saw most of the leading players get off to a nervous start, including leader du Preez, who pull-hooked his first few tee shots.
He showed his experience, however, and held on to a comfortable lead throughout the day, scoring a second round 75, winning by four shots from Jared Miller and five shots from Grant Tod.
