Hockey goes on despite wintry weather

The inclement weather on the morning of Saturday, July 25, was not exactly what the doctor ordered for the annual Benoni Northerns Junior Hockey (BNJH) Tournament, for u-5 to u-11 hockey players.

Despite the wet and cold early morning conditions (that saw some unexpected hail fall) the numbers increased from last year to about 1 300 players, which was, according to BNJH chairman Shaun Taylor, a success in itself.

“The rain chased a lot of people away, but those who stayed on and carried on playing, particularly the u-13 teams, provided good and positive feedback,” he said.

The tournament also offered the chance for the Eastern Gauteng Hockey Association (EGHA) to integrate new umpires, who are still learning about and getting to grips with calling games.

Taylor said that this integration of new officials went down extremely well.

He added that he is already looking forward to next year’s tournament, which, he hopes, will grow even bigger and better.
