Paton is the Lake’s junior champ
The Lake Club Benoni held their Junior Club Championships over the weekend of Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24.
According to the club’s golf director, Rob van Velzen, the Junior Club Champs is looked forward to by all juniors with firm expectations of winning their respective divisions.
“What a weekend we had here at Lake,” he said.
The first day of the champs was led by Kyle Opperman with a decent score of 75, followed by Keagan Martin and Ryan van Velzen (76).
Sunday’s weather conditions were tough with the junior golfers starting early on a cold morning with the wind getting stronger hole by hole.
“The boys all got off to a good start but Ryan was in the lead with nine holes to play by one shot.
“The last nine started and Chase Paton quickly caught Ryan and they were tied up with a few holes to play, closely followed by Kyle.
“Chase hit an exceptional shot on 16 to make a birdie and gain the lead by one over Kyle and two over Ryan.
“Kyle made a good birdie on 17 to tie with Chase with both making bogeys on 18, but, Ryan made a spectacular birdie to force a play-off with Chase.”
He added that the first play-off hole was won by Paton who made a solid par which was enough to see off van Velzen.
“The boys and girls had a fantastic weekend, but all thanks must go out to the Rutherford family and Coalmac for sponsoring the event for the 21st year.
“The Lake Club Benoni would like to thank the Rutherfords for their sponsorship and continued support, it really means a lot to the boys and girls,” said van Velzen.
