The Lakefield Sporting Club (LSC), a facility known as AstroPlex, has just completed construction of three Fifa-approved Astroturfs, six-a-side football courts and one action cricket court.

It is located at the Lake Club Golf Course on the corner of Edward and Divot Streets in Lakefield.

Established in 2019 by a group of close friends who share a love for sport and a passion for community development, LSC is, according to Abdul Rehman Sibda, chairperson of LSC, committed to sporting excellence and community development.

“We are strongly advocating non-racial and gender equality while prioritising youth development,” he explained.

“LSC’s leadership amasses over 100 years of combined sporting administration, general sporting and business experience, each having excelled in their field.”

Registered trademark AstroPlex associates itself with premium sporting facilities primarily focusing on indoor sports, such as cricket, netball, volleyball and soccer.

“Having partnered with South Africa’s leading Astroturf company, LSC aims to lead the industry within a short time,” said Sibda.

“In addition to hiring out courts for social matches, we will be hosting leagues and regular tournaments as well.”

Some of the leagues that are offered:

• Men’s Super League

• Men’s Premier League

• Men’s Division One League

• Women’s leagues

• Over 35 and over 45 leagues

• Corporate leagues

• School leagues

“We have also established the AstroPlex Academy of Sport, which will provide excellent coaching and tutelage by experienced and accredited coaches for learners and private individuals,” he said.

“Sporting codes catered for will be soccer, cricket and netball and is open to both boys and girls.”

“The first leagues for this year will begin on May 17 and will offer exciting value to participants in the form of generous prize money and team prizes,” he said.

Leagues will take place as follows:

• Monday: Men’s Premier League

• Tuesday: Men’s Super League

• Wednesday: Ladies leagues

• Thursday: Men’s Division One League

• Friday, Saturday and Sunday: Social games and veterans’ leagues.
