CGA cross-country event attracts hundreds

The fourth meeting will take place at Chris Hani Sports Complex in Orange Farm on June 18

Raphael Segodi and Farida Zwane won the senior men’s and women’s 10km titles at Central Gauteng Athletic’s (CGA) third cross-country league meeting on June 5 at Boksburg Stadium.

The men’s race was closely contested as only six seconds separated first and second place. Segodi stormed to the finish in 32:26, with Boikanyo Motlhamme hot on his heels in 32:32. Lesetja Papo from Tsakane Athletics Club rounded off the top three in 32:37.

The 26-year old Zwane beat a staggering line-up that included Johnson Crane Hire Marathon winner Cornelia Joubert. She whizzed to the finish line in 38:30, edging second-placed Maria Shai by 02:27. Joubert completed the race in 41:11.

The event attracted hundreds of athletes who competed in different age groups, vying for a place at the CGA provincial championships on August 20.

According to CGA general manager, Mandla Radebe, the league’s objective is to keep the athletes fit so that the province can select a competitive team for the national championships scheduled for later this year.

“It was the third of the seven league meetings where athletes are given an opportunity to compete, prepare and build up towards the provincial and national championships,” Radebe said.

He revealed that at these meetings, all athletes are granted the same opportunity and that no points are accumulated as a decision for the provincial team will only be taken after August 20.

“There’s no point system. We use positions and we’ll consider the top six in each age category at the provincials to make up the team for the national championship.”
