Futsal festival pulls huge crowds

The tournament attracted over 300 players

The 2022 Astroplex annual six-a-side junior soccer festival was a resounding success as over 300 players from across the province took to the courts on October 8 and 9.

A total of 21 teams consisting of U13, U15 and U17s (seven in each division) kicked off the tournament on October 8 on the facility’s three courts with great fanfare. This year, the tournament attracted huge crowds, including spectators, from as far as Polokwane.

Boca FC walked away with the U13 trophy, beating Young Stars in the final. The U15 division was won by Laudium All-Stars, while Joga Bonito beat West Rand Sporting to walk away with the U17 trophy.

In a much friendlier affair, although the competition was still fierce, a total of 24 U7, U9 and U11s (eight in each division) teams took to the courts on October 9, ushering in a new crop of futsal players.

Astroplex chairperson Abdul Rehman Sibda was pleased with the turnout.

“We were amazed at the talent displayed by the players in all the age groups. The support from the public was bigger than last year’s event. I want to thank Broadway Sweets for continuing to invest in football development in the community,” he said.
