Mall installs state-of-the-art cameras

The LPR system promises to deter criminal movement at the mall

Lakeside Mall has become the latest major shopping centre to install licence plate reader (LPR) cameras at all seven of the centre’s parking entrances and exits.

The system forms part of a national database that tracks and alerts authorities if a stolen vehicle is detected by the cameras.

According to Chantell Roemer, Lakeside Mall portfolio manager, crime is a core concern for all shopping centres and security has become an increasingly complex and technical management issue.

“We consider our security system in its entirety from the surveillance inside the mall to the car parks and felt it had become a priority to extend this outside the entrances.

“We believe LPRs will greatly enhance our efforts to support public safety and align our security efforts with what is happening nationwide while offering greater protection to our shoppers, tenants, staff and community.”

The new LRP system not only sends real-time information regarding the movement of stolen vehicles in and around the mall but may further alert the SAPS and associated security companies of wanted or missing persons linked to the flagged vehicle.

With the festive season approaching fast, spikes and booms will be installed at all parking entry and exit points.

Roemer said that the centre is monitored by 60 CCTV cameras and that the control room is in constant radio communication with 23 on-site guards as well as a number of plain-clothed officials.

All security personnel and stores are in possession of panic buttons that are connected to two tactical response companies, law enforcement and emergency services.

Car guards continuously undergo security training to ensure greater protection of shoppers.
