That’s my only critique of Nataniël after seeing his latest stage production, After Animals.
Somehow, this guy is able to inspire and amaze with a small cast and rather limited stage.
I couldn’t believe my eyes, when watching some of the dancers perform in a world which seems cut off from our own in some way.
In Nataniël’s world, there is no laws of physics, there’s a magic hat with all manner of weird and hilarious stories and there is an unlimited supply of imaginative costumes.
Inspired by his travels and love for both classic and contemporary art, the show takes place in the not-so-distant future and begins on the night when, during a secret ceremony, the last animal on earth is slaughtered and eaten.
The already fragile world immediately starts changing, from the forests to the cities, from the homes of families to the hearts of the most powerful individuals.
This forms the backdrop for Nataniël’s latest stories, in both English and Afrikaans, and songs.
He pleasantly interweaves humorous stories with dark and fantastical dances and awes the audience with his powerful voice.
The cast includes Nicolaas Swart (vocals), Francois Joubert (vocals), Martin van Heerden (dancer), Bradley Dreyer (acrobat), Charl du Plessis (keyboard), Juan Oosthuizen (guitar), Werner Spies (bass) and Hugo Radyn (drums).
A highly original and ambitious wardrobe, inspired by sculpture and origami, was created by multi-award winner, Floris Louw.
The stage was designed by Nataniël with sets and props created by Nadine Minnaar and Stephan Kruger.
Lighting was done by Nataniël and Kevin Stannet.
From the first moment it’s clear that the cast were put through their paces to perform as precisely and gracefully as they do.
This show is visually one of the best I’ve ever seen and is definitely worth watching.
The production will run in the Theatre of Marcellus, at Emperor’s Palace until September 27.
Between Wednesdays and Saturdays shows start at 8.30pm.
On Sundays After Animals starts at 3pm.
There is a booking fee for the show, which can be booked through Computicket.
