Great Halloween fun at night market in Northmead

“Trick or treat, give me something sweet to eat” was a phrase echoed into the night by ghouls, goblins, mummies and fairies who showed up to partake in the festivities.

A fair consisting of spooky, scary and thrilling fun awaited many locals who converged at the Halloween Night Market on October 27 in Northmead.

The event was hosted in aid of Purple Red Paws and the South African National Blood Service (SANBS).

Purple Red Paws co-owner Marisa Meano said the organisation has been in existence for two years.

“We are a rehabilitation centre for abused and neglected animals,” she explained.

“We take in stray and abandoned animals. We currently have 80 dogs and 30 cats waiting to be rehomed.”

Located in Zesfontein, Meano explained that the animals that come through to Purple Red Paws are spayed, vaccinated and sterilised before going to a new home.

The SANBS was also present on the day.

Mobile clinic supervisor Julia Ndaba reiterated the requirements for blood donation.

“Donors need to be at least 16 years old”, she said.

“They must weigh over 50 kilograms, lead a healthy lifestyle and eat before they donate.

“A donor may only donate after every 56 days.”

Ndaba said individuals should bear in mind that donating blood means they are saving lives.

“Anyone at any time may require blood.

“This can be from someone in an accident to a person with cancer or even a pregnant woman,” she said.

On the day, Ndaba said they expected about 30 donors.

“One bag of blood collected can save three lives,” she said.

Bringing out their A-game, both children and adults played their part in making the event a success by dressing their part.

Organiser Cindy Joshua said the non-profit organisation (NPO) present at the event had various games available. Joshua said the proceeds raised from the games were for the NPOs.

“Everyone just wants to have a good time during these holidays (Halloween) and that’s what we want for them,” she said.

“This is also a safe place for kids to have fun and enjoy the festival.”

As the sun went down, the night came alive and those who attended were welcomed to a range of delights that included Halloween goods, stalls, trick or treat fun, a treasure hunt, fancy dress competition, spooky movie on the outdoor big screen, gaming activities and a funky photo booth.

Trick or treating was available at every table with children more than obliging in the tradition, and filled with excitement as their pumpkin-shaped treat carriers were filled to the brim.
