Berea police are warning people to be extra vigilant and keep windows closed as cat burglars are on the prowl.

BEREA police have issued a warning to the public to ensure their windows are secured. Police said they had noticed a many people were leaving windows open which were an open invitation to burglars.

Lieutenent PN Naidoo, Communications Officer at Berea SAPS said, “People are leaving windows open, which gives criminals a loophole to get into homes. Criminals are climbing up gutter and drain pipes, entering homes and flats through open windows.

“We noticed a few cases opened last week where break-ins occurred with criminals gaining entry through open windows. We appeal to the community to ensure all doors and windows are closed. Even if you have animals, try to refrain from leaving open windows as burglars are on the prowl,” he warned.

Naidoo also said business premises, especially those that were converted houses, were also being targeted by petty thieves. “Even if you are leaving the office to go to your car or bathroom, ensure that your personal items like cellphones are not left in sight. We are still finding cases were people have left expensive items such as ipads, and laptops visible in their backseats which is a major concern,” he said.
