UMBILO SAPS have made a number of good arrests this past week.
According to Sergeant Beverly Manqele, crime prevention officer were patrolling along South Coast Road last Thursday, when they saw a young suspect stealing 12 metres of tarpaulin, valued at R3 500.
“The 20-year-old man was seen removing it from the goods train wagon. We approached the suspect and he tried to run away but members gave chase and caught him. On questioning him and witnesses at the scene, we established that the suspect was stealing the property,” she said.
The property was handed back to the owner and the suspect was arrested and detained on charges of theft. He appeared before Durban Magistrate court. The case is under investigation by detectives.
In another case of theft, quick detective work led to the arrest of man on Tuesday for a theft he committed the previous day. ” A 61-year-old woman was at her Umbilo home when she heard noises from outside. She looked through the window and saw an unknown van leaving loaded with property. When she went out to investigate she discovered that two tool boxes, two garden tables and four garden chairs, valued at R5000 had been stolen and realized that the van that had just left was loaded with her furniture,” said Manqele.
The complainant was unable to get the registration number of the van as the incident had occurred too quickly, but Umbilo detectives opened case of theft and started investigation immediately. “On the following day we arrested the suspect and the property was recovered and returned to the owner,” she said.
