Reaction officer arrests church burglar

The vigilant efforts of a quick thinking reaction officer led to the arrest of a robber at a Florida Road church last week.

A vigilant Blue Security reaction officer arrested a housebreaker on the property of a church in Morningside and recovered stolen goods.

Blue Security managing director Darryn le Grange said the quick thinking armed reaction officer had pounced on the two housebreakers who were on the church property in Florida Road at 5am last week.

“The housebreakers had jumped over the back fence of the property, smashed a window and forced open a burglar bar to get into the building,” Le Grange said.

“They ransacked the building but were too slow for our reaction officer who quickly arrived on the scene and apprehended one of the men. He also managed to recover a television set they had stolen,” Le Grange said.

The suspect was handed over to the Berea police station where a case was opened for further investigation.

In a separate arrest, a Glenwood Community Watch member arrested a suspect who had fled from Frere Crescent into a property in Evans Road at around 5pm where he was found bleeding and hiding in an outbuilding. He was handed over to the Umbilo SAPS who attended the scene.

Le Grange said home invasions had abated in the area over the past two weeks according to crimes reported to the company, although there was an armed robbery reported where a pedestrian was held up at knife-point in Princess Alice Avenue and robbed of two cellphones.
