Berea police have made good arrests of petty thieves recently.

BEREA police made good arrests over the past week.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, Communcations Officer at Berea SAPS, on Sunday, 13 October officers from the crime prevention unit were patrolling Winter Avenue in Musgrave when they noticed a suspicious man carrying a red and black bag.

“Our members stopped the man to question him and he added to their suspicion saying he had some stuff in the bag that someone had given him. When they searched the bag they found two bottles of wine and boosting cables.”

The suspect continued with his story that another person had given the bag with goods to him. Eventually police asked the suspect to take them to the person who had given him the bag but he couldn’t find the person or explain his possession of the suspected stolen items. He was arrested for the possession of suspected stolen property.

Braai stand stolen

On Friday, 10 October in Fourth Avenue, members of the Berea crime prevention unit noticed a suspicious man carrying a Weber braai stand along the road.

“When police asked him where he got it from, he admitted he had taken it from one of the homes in Fourth Avenue. He showed police the home he took the braai stand from and the owner confirmed it was stolen from his yard,” said Naidoo.

The suspect was arrested and changed for theft and the recovered braai stand was returned to the owner.

Be aware when walking or jogging say police

Berea police Communications Officer, Lieutenant PN Naidoo warned pedestrians and joggers to be extra careful when walking in the area as a number petty thefts are being reported. The vicinity around Old Dutch Road, Musgrave Centre and dark areas of Morningside and Musgrave have the public losing valuables to thieves. “Don’t text or get distracted by your phone when walking or jogging in the area as criminals are opportunists,” Naidoo advised.
