UMBILO police have executed a number of good arrests this past week.
Communications Officer at Umbilo Police, Sergeant Beverly Manqele said the first incident was at a business premises on Magwaza Maphalala Street, in the early hours of Sunday morning.
“Constable HP Blose and members from the community service centre, attended to a complaint of housebreaking in progress. When they arrived at the scene they met the complainant, a security guard from the security armed response unit who pointed the box full of T-shirts stolen from the premises. Police searched the premises and the suspect was found hiding at the back yard,” she said.
The suspect was questioned and immediately placed under arrest; he was detained for the crime he committed.
The case is under investigation and the 23-year-old suspect has appeared in Durban Magistrate’s Court. The stolen property was returned to the owner.
Possession of dagga
A 21-year-old man was arrested for possession of dagga on Tuesday evening, 15 October on Melbourne Road.
According to Sgt Beverly Manqele, Student Constable SI Mjaji was on duty in full uniform performing crime prevention duties along Melbourne Road when they noticed a suspicious man. “We stopped and searched the suspect and found parcels of dagga in the back pocket of his pants,” she said.
The man was arrested and detained for possession of dagga, he will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court this week.
Manqele said the ten parcels of dagga recovered had a street valued of about R2000.
GPS navigator stolen from parked car
Berea community came to the assistance of a woman on Tuesday afternoon, 15 October after her car was broken into on King Dinizulu (Berea) Road.
According to Umbilo SAPS Communications Officer, Sergeant Beverly Manqele, the Umbilo crime prevention members were patrolling along Berea Road when they noticed a crowd and went to investigate. “A woman told them she had parked her car and locked it with all the windows closed and went inside the shop. As she entered a person told her there was someone inside the ca. In shock they both rushed outside to find the suspect inside the car. He tried to run away but the complainant blocked him and screamed for help,” said Manqele.
Passersby came to the woman’s assistance and the suspect was apprehended. “They interviewed the man and found a grey remote control and spare remote control battery in his possession. The car map navigator which was taken was not found in the possession of the suspect. His finge prints were taken and he was arrested and detained for theft out a of motor vehicle.”
