Police stop robbers in their tracks

Two would be car robbers were stopped in their tracks by Umbilo police vispol members.

ALERT members of the Umbilo Visible Policing Unit arrested a man carrying a car breaking implement before he was able to break into a car last Thursday.

According to Sergeant Beverly Manqele, communications officer at Umbilo SAPS, the man was arrested for possession of an unusual car breaking implement. “Our members were patrolling along Umbilo near Ayott Avenue when they noticed two suspicious men looking into cars. Before they could do anything further they stopped and searched the men and found two spark plugs on them. The spark plugs are called bombers on the street and used by criminals to smash windows of cars,” she said.

Manqele warned people to be cautious and alert when driving as the “bombers” are also used for smash and grabs.

The two men were arrested for possession of car breaking implements.

With the festive season fast approaching, Manqele warned the public to be especially vigilant when locking cars. “Physically look at your car when locking it with a remote as many criminals are using remote jammers. Avoid parking in isolated areas. If ever you feel you are being followed from a bank, rather drive to your nearest police station,” she advised.
