Berea police detective arrested a security guard for theft and recovered stolen laptops at a local campus.

THE good investigative work of a Berea police detective saw the recovery of two laptops stolen from a local higher education institution last week.

According to Berea SAPS Communications Officer, Lieutenant PN Naidoo, after the theft was reported Detective Constable MM Mabaso went to the campus to interview all the guards at the campus.

“The security company had suspected one of their guards, but it was the wrong person. After interviewing them all, Detective Mabaso discovered that one guard had seen another near Berea Railway Station carrying a bag suspected of having the laptops,” said Naidoo.

Mabaso spoke to the suspect again and the guard admitted to taking the laptops which were valued at R15000 each.

“The guard also told Mabaso that one of the laptops had already been sold and the other was at his home in Engonyeni. The detective went to Umbumbulu area where he recovered the sold laptop then the security guards home where he found the second laptop,” Naidoo added.

The 41-year-old security guard, the breadwinner of his family, was arrested and charged with theft.
