Possession of a dangerous weapon

Constable M Mbele arrested a 21-year-old would-be robber on Friday, 1 November for possession of a dangerous weapon at the notorious Rossburgh footbridge. Sergeant Beverly Manqele, Communications Officer at Umbilo SAPS said, “Mbele and members were patrolling along Sarnia Road footbridge when they noticed the suspect hiding in the trees in the bush where there is a high rate of robberies. Upon searching the accused he found a broken bottle top in his front pants pocket.”

The young man was arrested and charged for possession of a dangerous weapon. The case is under investigation.

Theft by false pretences

A 29-year-old man was arrested for theft by false pretence on Saturday afternoon, 2 November at a Berea Road restaurant after he refused to pay his R5000 bill.

The complainant, a manager at the restaurant told Umbilo police an employee reported that there was a person who had ordered and consumed drinks and food to the value of R5311.00 who was refusing to pay for the bill. “The complainant went up to the suspect and requested that he pay, the suspect refused saying that he wanted to see the shop closing down,” said Sergeant Beverly Manqele of Umbilo SAPS.

When police arrived to question the man, he did not deny having consumed the food and drinks served but said he did not have money to pay. The suspect was arrested and detained. Umbilo detectives are investigating a case of theft by false pretence. The suspect appeared before Durban Magistrate Court.

Reckless and negligent driving

Constable SS Khumalo arrested a 51-year-old man on Thursday night, 31 October on Helen Joseph Road.

“We attended to a collision and on arrival the officer interviewed both parties as the two vehicles, a white Kia and a grey Nissan van, were involved and damaged in the collision,” said Sergeant Beverly Manqele of Umbilo SAPS.

Manqele said the driver of the Kia said the van had just reversed straight into her vehicle and the driver started swearing and threatened to assault her. “On interviewing the driver of the van he did not co operate until the officer handcuffed him and his breath smelled of alcohol. The suspect was taken for breathalyzer test which tested 1.45 which is 6 times over the limit. The driver was placed under arrest and taken to Addington hospital to have his blood taken. The suspect was detained for reckless and negligent driving,” added Manqele.

The case is under investigation.
