Umbilo SAPS notched up more successes in their fight against crime.

Umbilo SAPS carried out a number of arrests this past week.

Man arrested for copper theft

UMBILO police arrested a man on Mazisi Kunene Avenue last Wednesday morning, 27 November for copper theft.

Accoridng to Sergeant Beverly Manqele, a jogger passed the 23-year-old suspect who was carrying a black bag full of copper pipes.

“The officers interviewed the suspect and he admitted to having stolen the copper pipes valued at R2500. The suspect was arrested and detained the case is under investigation,” said Manqele.

Man arrested for stealing truck light and cables

A 53-year-old man was arrested by the Umbilo VISPOL members who were performing crime prevention duties in the Rossburgh area on Sunday afternoon, 1 December.

Members saw a suspicious man with a truck light and brake cables, valued at R1800. “The members stopped and questioned the suspect who later confessed to have stolen the property from the truck. Police took the suspect back to the truck. The driver of the truck was inside a shop buying food, and when he returned to the truck police took him to where the suspect and stolen property was being held. The driver inspected his truck and discovered the stolen property had indeed been stolen from his truck,” explained Sergeant Manqele.

The suspect was arrested, the case is under investigation.

Cellphone thief arrested 

While on patrol on Lena Ahrens Road on Wednesday morning, 27 November, Umbilo SAPS met a 40-year-old woman who reported that she had just been approached by a young man, who threatened to stab her if she didn’t give him her cellphone.

“The suspect was carrying papers in his hands and the victim alleges he told her that inside the papers was a knife and he would stab her if she didn’t give him money and the phone. The woman gave him a cell phone but didn’t have money. The suspect walked off and while the woman reported the incident to police, she saw the suspect and pointed him out to police. “Our members gave chase and caught the suspect, the property was found and handed back to the victim. The suspect was arrested .”

Dagga trees destroyed

Umbilo crime prevention members chopped down 18 dagga trees in the policing area last Wednesday.
