BEREA police officers have been hard at work trying to contain crime and bring criminals to book this past week.
According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo members police a man for housebreaking after he was caught red handed trying to raid the garage office of a Cowey Road home on Sunday, 8 December.
“Berea crime prevention unit received a complaint of a housebreaking in progress and went to the house. They heard noises coming from the garage adjoining the house. On arrival in the garage office, they found a man trying to steal computer equipment, a Sujitsho tower,” explained Naidoo.
The man was arrested and detained at Berea SAPS while the family were notified of the break in.
Car thief arrested
A man was arrested on Friday, 6 December for possession of car breaking implements on Musgrave Road.
The Berea Crime prevention members were patrolling along Musgrave Road, when they noticed a suspicious man peering into a few parked vehicles along the road. “The members stopped and searched the man and found a T-shape instrument, similar to an Allan key, which is used to break into cars,” explained Naidoo.
Naidoo said the public needed to look out for suspicious people walking on the road especially during the festive season. “Monitor suspicious people and alert police by calling 1011 and give a description and request an Incident Report number,” he advised.
Car thief caught red handed
A man was arrested for car theft on Friday, 6 December on Florida Road.
According to Lt Naiddo of Berea SAPS, a man had parked his car on Florida Road outside a business premises. “After going in, the man noticed someone trying to break into his vehicle. He alerted police and staff at the store he was at and they arrived and arrested the suspect.”
“The man was inside the car. The car had rolled and hit into another vehicle when he was arrested,” Naidoo added.
The man was charged with theft of a vehicle and he was detained at Berea SAPS.
Man arrested for unlicenced gun
A man was arrested on Saturday 7, December after he was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
According to Lt Naidoo, the man was driving recklessly from Clark Road in the Umbilo policing area into Berea. “He failed to stop his vehicle and was eventually stopped by Berea police on Botanic Gardens Road near Edith Benson and searched. Police found a pistol, with a magazine and rounds on the man. The serial number on the pistol had been removed.
The firearm will be sent for ballistic testing to see if hasbeen used in any crimes.
