BEREA police wish the community a safe festive season and with Christmas only a week away, encourage the public to be extra vigilant.
According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, the holidays are usually a time where people let their guard down especially when preoccupied with shopping and entertaining the children and visitors.
“Last minute shoppers need to be extra careful, don’t be complacent with safety checks when rushing from one mall to the next. We notice that some people become negligent over the holidays leaving cellphones and Garmin navigators still charging in cars,” he said.
Another common crime to be aware of Naidoo said was criminals using remote jamers. “When busy shopping, make sure cars are locked and double check to see that it is securely locked,” he added.
Naidoo said Berea police would be conducting random road blocks throughout the holiday season ensuring that drugs, drunken driving and unlicenced firearms are off the roads.
“Rather get a cab to and from parties if you intend on drinking as driving under the influence will not be tolerated. Don’t take any chances on the road and think about the lives of others when getting into cars. There will be extreme penalties if caught in a roadblock,” he warned.
