Berea police have been hard at work arresting suspects and bringing crime levels to a minimum over the past week.

Hospital taps recovered

A man was arrested last Thursday morning at St Aidan’s Hospital after he removed two taps from a hospital bathroom.

According to Lieutenant PN Naidoo, Communications Officer at Berea SAPS, the man entered the hospital and used the toilet. A security guard noticed that he left with two water taps from the toilet. “The guard alerted the police and whilst the suspect was still on the premises we were able to respond and arrest him for theft. He was detained at SAPS Berea and the taps were returned,” added Naidoo.

Hijacked Toyota Hiace recovered

A man was hijacked by a gang of four men while parking in his Toyota Hiace at the corner of Musgrave and Berea Roads.

“The men allegedly demanded his vehicle and pushed the complainant out and took his vehicle. Later that day, one suspect was arrested and the vehicle was recovered in the Morningside area. The suspect was charged for theft of a motor vehicle and detained at SAPS Berea.

Cops arrest car thief

A man was arrested for theft out of a motor vehicle last Thursday, 9 January after he was caught with goods from the car.

According to Lt PN Naidoo, a man parked his car in Rapson Road, with all doors and windows locked but when he returned, he noticed the side window smashed and items stolen.

“He called the police who responded quickly. Police tracked down the suspect and recovered property in the vicinity of Morningside. The suspect was charged and detained at Berea SAPS. The pink children’s laptop and mp3 player was returned to the owner,” added Naidoo.

Three arrested for remote jammers

Crime prevention unit police were on patrol along Botanic Gardens Road on Friday afternoon, 10 January when they noticed three suspects looking into parked vehicles on the road.

“They stopped and searched the suspects and found them with in possession of remote jammers, allen keys and bank cards. They were arrested for possession of car breaking implements and detained at SAPS Berea,” said Naidoo.

Crime Awareness

Berea police have noticed a few housebreakings where garages have been broken into because they are away from the home and on the roadside. “Please try to secure these garages and possibly use dummy cameras to deter suspects or connect alarm systems,” said Naidoo.

He also advised people not to park vehicles in isolated spots or shady areas and once again reminded people not to leave valuables visible in vehicles.

Operations yield 20 drunk drivers

Ongoing operations over the festive period have continued. Last week Berea SAPS and Metro Police arrested 20 drunk drivers and after a stop and search, five were arrested for possession of dagga.
