
THE establishment of the Provincial Integrated Vehicle Task Team yielded results when it arrested 173 suspects for various crimes around the province.
An integrated vehicle team comprised of the South African Police Service, The Durban Metropolitan Police, The Department of Transport: Special Operations Directorate, and the only vehicle tracking company officially affiliated with the SAPS, Tracker Connect.
These operations started on 1 January 2013 and ran until 31 December around the province with the aim of getting rid of illegal firearms, drugs and tracing wanted suspects and recovery of stolen vehicles.
During the operation 670 vehicles and 29 firearms were recovered and 281 summons were issued.
A total of 173 suspects were arrested for various crimes such as house robbery, theft of motor, possession of unlicensed firearms, armed robbery, possession of drugs, murder, house breaking, possession of stolen property, hijacking and other crimes. All the suspects appeared in various courts around the province.
Lt Gen Mmamonnye Ngobeni, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, commended members for the arrests and the recovery of firearms and stolen vehicles.
“This is a commendable achievement on the part of the members responsible for these arrests and recoveries. It indicates the dedication to fight and combat crime in all its forms,” she said.
