QUICK thinking by two Chubb Fire and Security officers thwarted a second attempt at a hijacking and led to the recovery of a stolen luxury vehicle belonging to a client on 11 February.
The attempted hijacking took place at 8.33am when a woman was at the intersection of Umgeni Road and St Mathias Road, Morningside. Two men held her up and Chubb sub-contractor, Riaan Botha, witnessed the incident and notified the Chubb monitoring centre. The centre dispatched on duty Chubb response shift leader, Lenny Govender to the scene. A back up vehicle was also dispatched and the SAPS were informed of the unfolding events.
When Govender arrived at the scene he was informed by bystanders that the armed suspects had fled on foot into Umgeni Road in a westerly direction. Govender proceeded along Umgeni Road but there were no signs of the suspects.
Govender then received a call to say a confirmed hijacking had taken place at 1277 Umgeni Road. Govender drove to the premises where he was informed by the staff that the company’s managing director had been hijacked minutes earlier and the vehicle was being tracked to Indus Lane, Springfield.
Govender, with the assistance of Botha, proceeded to the area and recovered the client’s abandoned Mercedes Benz. Both suspects had fled on foot with the client’s belongings.
Durban Central SAPS arrived soon thereafter and a search of the area began.
It is believed the two suspects were involved in both incidents, however as yet no arrests have been made.
