Glenwood boys bring classic novel to life

Glenwood High School pupils present a production of the Lord of the Flies.

GLENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL presents Lord of the Flies by Nobel Prize Winner William Golding, at Glenwood High School’s Mvinjelwa Johannes Mhlongo hall from 25 to 27 March.

William Golding’s great novel, a potent allegory about the loss of innocence and the decline of civilization, is brought to dramatic life in Nigel Williams’ adaptation for stage. A plane crashes on a deserted island. The only survivors are a group of school boys. By day, it’s a tropical paradise of sun and sea, but each night, their dreams are inhabited by a terrifying beast. Thrust into a teenage version of ‘Survivor’, before long this well-behaved group turns into a bloodthirsty and murderous tribe.

Myth and naturalism combine in a dynamic exploration of power, democracy, and the dichotomy of good and evil that is within us all. Lord of the Flies brings up many issues central to the lives of today’s adolescents – peer pressure, bullying, gang rivalry – in its depiction of reason versus chaos.

Glenwood’s production features Marius Vermaak (Roger), Jayme Forget (Ralph), Dominic Pinheiro (Simon), Brendon Erwee (Piggy), and Mfundo Dlamini (Jack Merridew).

Tickets are R50 for adults, R30 for school pupils and R25 block bookings (15 or more), and are available from the school or email schoeman@glenwoodhighschool.co.za. or contact 031 205 5241.
