Ela Gandhi becomes CANSA volunteer

Peace activist, Ela Gandhi, is the Cancer Association of South Africa's newest volunteer.

IN anticipation of World Cancer Day on 4 February, Mrs Ela Gandhi, social worker and peace activist, visited the Mkhuhla CANSA Care Home and became CANSA’s newest volunteer.

She was accompanied by Dr Nirvadha Singh, a specialist in public health medicine and member of the governing body of the Cancer Association of South Africa.

Dr Singh will be the first speaker at a new cancer support group opening on Tuesday, 3 February at 6pm at the CANSA offices on 619 Umbilo Road, Durban.

Dr Singh will be speaking about a holistic approach to cancer, encompassing the psycho-social aspects of the disease.

Snacks will be provided, followed by games of bingo.

The aim of the group is to provide support, information and a platform to meet other people with cancer and their families and friends in the greater Berea and Umbilo areas. It will meet monthly thereafter.

“CANSA is very privileged to have Mrs Gandhi become a volunteer with the organisation. She is a social worker and peace activist, following and promoting Gandhian values, especially non-violence, which is a concept embracing not only human life but the conservation of the environment too. Her personal belief is that life can be improved by good thoughts and a change in attitude.

“We have to help people to enhance their quality of life no matter what happens,” she said.

Mrs Gandhi recently visited India, where she was impressed with a well-known artist and cancer sufferer whose art helped him and his family to deal with the stress of the disease. In her words, “If you can achieve oneness with the universe and yourself within it, you can achieve peace.”
