Memorial gathering for professor

A memorial service will be held at UKZN to honour Prof Emeritus Patricia Berjak.

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) will host a memorial gathering to celebrate the life of Professor Emeritus Patricia Berjak, a renowned seed biologist.

The memorial will be at the Biological and Conservation Sciences Building on the Westville Campus, UKZN on Saturday, 21 February at 11am.

Professor Berjak passed away at the age of 75, after a short illness, on 21 January. She served the former University of Natal and UKZN for over 48 years and in many capacities, including Head of Department, numerous university committees and more recently expert/mentor in the Research Office.

She joined the Plant Biology Department at the University of Natal in 1966 as a Junior Lecturer. As a Professor Emeritus, she continued to lecture and actively supervised post-graduate students within the School of Life Sciences at UKZN up until October, 2014.

Parking for the service will be available across the road from the building. No flowers need be taken; instead, donations to a cat support charity or KZN Coastal Branch of Botanical Society of South Africa are preferred.
