Soup kitchen needs help

The community is encouraged to support the feeding scheme at Kenneth Gardens.

THE Carrots and Peas kitchen at Kenneth Gardens needs support from the community.

The kitchen recently benefited from generous donations by Glenridge Church of a new stove, air conditioning unit and a 'facelift' through tiling of the work area, and the church donates food every week. Durban University of Technology also helped with a microwave and is giving the kitchen items from its wish list whenever possible.

“Unfortunately these donations only go so far in helping up feed the 150 residents a day, as well as the extra 70 people we feed at Flamingo Court on a Wednesday. We need donations of food and equipment, but we also need money to be able to buy gas, which we get through Afrox. A 48kg cylinder costs us R1 200, which we need cash for,” said Joyce Gunkel, one of the dedicated women who run the kitchen.

She said the residents would appreciate cups of tea, especially when it was cold, and the kitchen would appreciate a donation of an urn.

“We need more 100-litre pots as well as food, such as 10kg bags of rice, as we use between 17kg and 20kg at a time. Also five-litre bottles of oil, mealie meal, samp, sugar, tea bags, sugar beans, spices and juice, as well as some plastic tumblers,” said Joyce.

Zandile Ntaka, who helps run the kitchen, said if people could commit to donating R100 a month this would help, as the kitchen would be guaranteed that money each month.

“We work for nothing, we have homes to run and we spend time at the kitchen volunteering our services. We need all the help we can get from the community,” she said.

If you can help, contact Joyce on 073 615 5289 or Zandile on 073 987 2980.
