Family reunited
There's been a happy ending for a mother of four, who has been reunited with her children.
IN October 2014, the Durban Child and Youth Care Centre sent out an appeal, asking the community to assist a mother of four who desperately needed work to get back on her feet and reunited with her children.
According to Thina Hlophe from the centre, she was very grateful for the positive response received from generous people willing to assist in various ways.
“Almost a year later, we are excited to share that Nompumelelo, who has three of her four children living at our centre, now has secure accommodation in Durban and a small monthly income from property she inherited. This means that she can now resume care of her children. We are delighted that this family has the chance to be reunited, have relationships restored and that these three children have the opportunity to be raised within their own family,” said Thina.
She said unfortunately, this story was the exception rather than the rule and many children remain in centres such as this for lengthy periods.
Eighteen-year-old Kwenzi (not his real name) is an example of this. Having struggled with the mainstream education system after missing out on large chunks of his early education before coming to the centre, he recently completed a short course at the Elangeni FET College, Ntuzuma, which provides him with a certificate for furniture making, woodwork and carpentry.
“Securing employment is critical before Kwenzi leaves our residential programme in a few months’ time. His dream of being part of a family can only become a reality if he is able to support himself, so if you can help with an employment opportunity please contact us,” said Thina.
