Walk for awareness
Take to the streets this October and join the Umgeni Community Empowerment Centre in creating awareness of human trafficking.
AN Anti-Human Trafficking 5km Fun Walk/Run will be held at the Green Hub at Blue Lagoon on Sunday 4 October from 8.30am, to 2pm.
The event is being hosted by the Umgeni Community Empowerment Centre (UCEC), which has six projects, namely the early childhood development centre, a counselling centre, the benevolent and feeding ministry, a safe house for women, and a safe house for men and anti-human trafficking awareness.
In order to fulfill these aims, the organization depends on funds and contributions from donor agencies, benevolent individuals, companies, corporations, government sectors, churches, and other interest groups. The walk is by far the largest fundraising project that UCEC has embarked on and requires intense and detailed organisation and funding. The proceeds of the walk are geared towards the equipping and upkeep of the Shiloh Crisis Centre, thus ensuring that abused women and children UCEC accommodates will continue to have a place of refuge.
This is the second annual anti-human trafficking walk, and as October is the official anti-human trafficking month, it is an ideal time for awareness of this problem.
Part of the parade will be a display of models locked up in a cage with red ribbons around their mouths. The models are made up to look as if bruised and abused to create a visual representation of the nature and the condition which the trafficked victims undergo.
The event will also showcase Harley Davidson motorcycles, roller-bladers, skate boarders, bands, guest speakers and a fun filled kiddies corner with face painting, games and mascots. The walk is supported by Sharks player Tera Mtembu and some of his team mates. Also partnering with UCEC is long time sponsor Springbok Rugby legend Andre Joubert and his company 3C technologies.
