Generous shoppers help make a difference

A new water tank and school necessities were provided for chidren at the Durban Child and Youth Care Centre, thanks to a project by Rotary Club of Durban.

A generous community spirit has helped the Rotary Club of Durban make a difference in the lives of children living at the Durban Child and Youth Care Centre.

For a period of a month during the festive season, the Rotary club invited shoppers at Davenport Square to write a message of hope to a child at the Durban Child and Youth Care Centre as part of a fundraising initiative for the Centre.

The Rotary Club of Durban established a vegetable garden at the Centre last year, but when water problems were experienced, they needed to do some serious fundraising to buy a water tank to alleviate the problem.

Shoppers donated R5 and wrote a message of hope, motivation or inspiration to hang on the tree, to raise funds to buy the tank to collect water. Through the project, just over R20 000 was raised.

The club was able to give the children at the Centre a Christmas party, buy school uniforms and stationery for the children starting school, and a water tank was generously donated by Atlas Scrap.

President, Mike Hiron, thanked the community for their help in making this a reality.
