The People’s Economic Forum launched in Durban
The People's Economic Forum offers people-centred events, which are free for everyone to attend.
AS Durban prepares to host the World Economic Forum on Africa from next week, different organisations, groups, movements and social enterprises are currently hosting the People’s Economic Forum at the Durban University of Technology, Steve Biko Campus, and other venues in Durban.
The purpose of the forum which is supported by Oxfam South Africa and the National Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences South African BRICS Think Tank (SABTT), is to create a free, inclusive, people-friendly space for people to learn and share information and solutions for economic and financial inclusion, empowerment and transformation.

According to the Forum, the World Economic Forum (WEF) on Africa which takes place at the International Convention Centre in Durban from 3rd to 5th May 2017 is expected to be attended by about 2 000 carefully selected local and international political and economic elites, by invitation only.
“At the WEF on Africa, business and political elites will shape policies, make decisions and broker trade deals which will affect all of our lives and futures of the more than 1.2 billion Africans, mostly women, youth and small enterprises who will not be invited to attend WEF on Africa.”
“The People’s Economic Forum is a people’s response to the multiple crises created by political and economic elites – including the energy, food, water, climate, security, financial, inequality, poverty and corruption – that we all face,” A statement released by the Forum.

The People’s Economic Forum offers people-centred events, including local and international speakers, workshops, films and creative activism, which are free for everyone to attend.
Several films have been confirmed including International Emmy Award Winning Director Rehad Desai’s The Giant is Falling, which will premiere in Durban at the People’s Economic Forum.
Other free films include the powerful, newly released Kalushi: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu (SA); the internationally acclaimed Miners Shot Down (SA), festival favourites, The Yes Men Are Revolting (USA); Capitalism: A Love Story (USA) by Michael Moore; Cuba-An African Odyssey and a screening of a film that has never been-released that every South African should watch.

Through the free films, presentations and discussions, The People’s Economic Forum aims to explore the myriad of people-centred and people-driven economic and financial solutions and alternatives that exist in South Africa and around the world.
