Busy weekend for safety and emergency personnel

"It was a busy weekend, but it was policed well together with other security forces such as Metro and security companies."

IT WAS a bumper weekend as thousands of enthusiasts flocked to the city to take part in the various events held across Durban this past weekend. Metro Police, emergency paramedics and other security forces had their hands full as they worked around the clock to ensure the safety of everyone. Captain PN Naidoo, communications officer at Berea SAPS said: “It was a busy weekend, but it was policed well

together with other security forces such as Metro and security companies.”

“There was a roadblock on Friday where 14 people were arrested for drunk driving. There were a few cases reported from the Greyville Racecourse where the Vodacom Durban July took place. Seven arrests were made for various offences such as theft, fraud and suspected stolen property,” he said.

A number of car crashes also occurred and despite the visible policing. On Friday, a security guard was killed in a collision on Musgrave Road nead Sydenham Road in Durban. According to Rescue care paramedics, the two vehicles had collided in a partial head-on collision.

“The Durban Fire Department used the Jaws of Life and hydraulic equipment to free the man. He had sustained critical injuries and was placed on a manual ventilator on the scene. Once the patient had been extricated from the wreckage he was rushed through to a nearby hospital but sadly passed away during the night in hospital,” Garrith Jamieson of Rescue Care paramedics said.

Three people were also injured after three vehicles and a pedestrian were involved in a collision on Gillespie Street in the Point area of Durban on Saturday afternoon. Jamieson said: “Paramedics arrived on the scene to find that a vehicle had collided with a pedestrian before crashing into a vehicle coming in the opposite direction. This vehicle then collided into a stationary vehicle and the wall. Once all three had been stabilised they were transported to hospital.”
