Berea SAPS is urging residents to be alert this festive season.

Suspected thief arrested

A MAN was arrested for being in possession of suspected stolen property on 4 December.

Capt Poobalan Naidoo from Berea SAPS said on Monday at 1.50pm, police were patrolling along Marriott Road when they noticed a man acting suspiciously.

“Officers stopped and searched him and found a wireless ADSL router with accessories in his possession. When he was questioned about this property he could not give a reasonable explanation and he was charged for being in possession of suspected stolen property,” said Naidoo.

Naidoo said D/W/O PD Naicker was investigating a case of housebreaking where the accused was convicted of two counts and was given a sentence of 10 years imprisonment, and in a case of fraud where the accused was convicted of 17 counts, and received a sentence of 15 years imprisonment.

Awareness

BEREA SAPS urges residents to be safe on the streets during the festive season.

“Try not to walk in remote places at any time and be aware of your surroundings. If people start milling around be aware as it could be a setup for a robbery,” said Naidoo.

He said residents should never overload themselves with parcels while walking on the street, as made them a target.

“Do not carry large sums of money, and carry your wallet in an inside or front pocket. If you are out at night, stick to well lit areas and also try to get out in groups. Always let someone know where you are going and when you are expected to return,” he said.
