Learn about Cycads
Join Di Higginson Keath and Suvarna Parbhoo-Mohan on a walk to meet the ancient family of Cycad plants at Durban Botanic Gardens and hear their stories of survival.
THE Botanical Society of South Africa KZN Coastal Branch presents a talk on Cycads on Thursday, 28 June from 12.30pm to 2pm at Durban Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre.
Cycads are a very old species, some call the species “fossils of plants”, believed to be as old as the dinosaurs. Cycads are the most vulnerable plant group in South Africa and are among the most susceptible groups of plants in the world. In South Africa almost 70 per cent of the cycad species are threatened with extinction with four species on the brink of extinction and seven species with fewer than 100 plants left in the wild.

Draw a plant or write your own story or poem for selection in BotSoc’s national magazine, Veld & Flora. Take a pad, pencil and crayons.
All welcome. Entrance including teas at the start is R30 for BotSoc members, R50 for visitors, and R20 for students and learners. Proceeds go to BotSoc branch projects.
