THE International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Telecom World 2018 at Durban International Convention Centre (Durban ICC) got off to a smooth start with President Cyril Ramaphosa officially opening the conference on Monday.
The ITU Telecom World 2018 was held on African soil for the first time. This year’s conference themed Innovation for smarter digital development attracted approximately 8 000 delegates, including senior government leaders, captains of industry, tech SMEs, policy makers, investors, corporates and digital innovators. Thought-provoking debates during the four day conference featured the latest developments in technology such as preparations for 5G network and the opportunities it provides, business networking and innovation trends for smarter digital development.

Addressing delegates President Ramaphosa said technological change was proceeding at a pace far greater than anything humanity had experienced before.
“It is through forums like this that we are able not only to anticipate technological change, but also to harness it for the advancement of humanity. It is through bodies like the International Telecommunication Union that we craft a digital agenda for inclusivity, sustainability and development. We have the means and the responsibility to direct the evolution of information and communications technology towards the achievement of a better life for all the peoples of the world. It is our task to ensure that the 4th Industrial Revolution improves the human condition and that no one is left behind,” said President Ramaphosa.
